“If all your clients apply your recommendations, they will all come first. So what is the point?”
Short answer. No. If every brand applies the same Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) advice, every brand reaches the same baseline, not the same result. AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity do not rank brands on a single list: they build a new answer for each question, persona and market. Generic tactics make a brand eligible to be cited. What gets it recommended is a brand-specific diagnosis, continuous correction, and a story that is true and repeated by others.
We hear this in almost every other meeting. Usually from the sharpest person in the room.
I'll admit I like the question. It deserves better than a sales answer. So here is ours.
Is there a first place in an AI answer?
The objection assumes a podium that does not exist.
Search taught us to think in positions: ten blue links, one first place, everyone else fighting for what is left. AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity do not work that way. An answer is not a ranking. It is a synthesis, rebuilt every time, for one person, one intent, one market, one moment.
“Best skincare for sensitive skin” in Riyadh. “A gift for my father who loves watches” in Paris. “A school with a strong STEM programme near Dubai Marina.” Each question opens its own competition, with its own winners.
A brand is not first. A brand is chosen, or not, question by question.
That is why we analyse several hundred to several thousand prompts per brand. Not to find the podium. To map the territory.
Why doesn't generic GEO advice make every brand win?
Generic advice raises the floor. It never builds the ceiling.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a brand easier for AI assistants to find, understand and cite. There is a version of the objection that is right. If GEO means the same checklist for everyone, structured data, FAQ pages, a cleaner site, a few more reviews, then yes, everyone converges.
That work matters. It is hygiene. And hygiene makes you eligible, not chosen.
When every brand in a category says the same thing in the same format, the model has no reason left to prefer one over another. The tie is broken elsewhere: in what third parties write, what customers report, what sales staff say in store, what the press keeps repeating. Everything the checklist does not touch.
That is the part a copy-paste playbook cannot reach.
How are AYAN recommendations different for each brand?
Our recommendations are not a recipe. They are a diagnosis.
AYAN does not hand two brands the same plan, because no two brands have the same gap. We start from what a brand intends to be and compare it with what AI actually says about it: the values it gets credit for, the ones it loses to a competitor, the sources that write its story when its own channels stay silent.
A luxury house losing its craftsmanship narrative in one market and a delivery app losing on reliability in another do not need the same correction. One needs content. Another needs its frontline to carry a different message. A third needs its media spend pointed at the sources models actually trust.
Same platform. Opposite actions.

Two brands following AYAN recommendations are not following the same instructions. They are each correcting their own story.
What happens when every brand optimises for AI?
The race does not end. It accelerates.
Assume, for the sake of argument, that every brand in a category fixes everything tomorrow. The game would not freeze. Models update. Sources shift. New entrants arrive. Consumers ask new questions. The answer a brand won in October can be gone by December.
In a moving system, the advantage is not the recipe. It is the speed of the loop: read what AI says, trace why it says it, correct the cause, verify the effect, start again.

The brands that win are not the ones that applied the advice once. They are the ones that never stopped reading.
What gives a brand a lasting advantage in AI visibility?
What cannot be copied is what a brand actually is.
Here is the real answer to the objection. Tactics are public. Formats are public. Even the best playbook ends up on a conference slide within a year.
What is not public is the truth of a brand: what it does better, for whom, where, and why people say so. AI is, in the end, a very large machine for repeating what the world says about you. Optimisation can make that truth easier to read. It cannot invent it, and it cannot hand it to a competitor.
If everyone follows the same advice, everyone becomes legible. Then the only question left is the oldest one in marketing.
When your competitors become as visible as you are, what will AI find to say about you that it cannot say about them?
None of this replaces the fundamentals of marketing. In the age of AI, being recommended still starts with being worth recommending.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is how often and how accurately a brand is mentioned, described and recommended in the answers of AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
If competitors use the same GEO tactics, does my brand lose its advantage?
No. Shared tactics raise the baseline for everyone. The advantage comes from what is specific to the brand: its own gaps, the sources that describe it, and how fast it corrects what AI gets wrong.
Do AI assistants rank brands like search engines do?
No. They generate a new answer for each question, so a brand can be recommended for one persona or market and absent for another. AI visibility has to be measured across many prompts, not as a single position.
How does AYAN help brands improve their AI visibility?
AYAN reads what AI says about a brand, traces the sources behind it, recommends brand-specific corrections across content, frontline, campaigns and e-commerce, and verifies the effect over time.
